We Tried it: Red Wine Drinking Chocolate

January 12, 2017

I know what you're thinking; red wine mixed with drinking chocolate sounds kind of weird.  And I'm not going to lie to you, it kind of was.  I started seeing blog posts about this combo earlier this week, and found a recipe on www.immaeatthat.com.  Then, last night, my co-founder (aka husband) and I hosted a game night and since it was cold and rainy, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to try this cocktail out.

The general consensus was "this is a little weird" and "I'm not sure how I feel about this drink, but I'm going to drink it".  I'm thinking part of the weird factor came from us using almond milk instead of regular milk (apparently "Veganuary" is a thing?) so if I did this recipe again I'd definitely try regular milk to avoid clashing flavors.

If you're adventurous, give this recipe a try.  I'm not going to guarantee it's a crowd pleaser, but I will guarantee it'll make you say "well, that was interesting".  And, honestly, this recipe is so easy there's really nothing to lose.

  • 1.5 cups milk
  • 1/3 cup rich, dark chocolate (Askinosie 72% Dark Tanzania Chocolate is a great pick here) chopped finely
  • 1 cup red wine (something robust like a Cabernet Sauvignon or Zinfandel to stand up to the richness of dark chocolate)

Recipe (serves 2):

Heat milk over medium heat in a saucepan.  Add chopped dark chocolate and whisk constantly until melted.  If you have an immersion blender, use it!  It'll help the chocolate integrate into the milk and make your cocoa nice and frothy.  Once the chocolate is fully mixed with the milk, add your red wine to the saucepan.  Stir everything together until warm.
