We Tried it: Cold Brew Coffee Made in a Mason Jar

October 12, 2016

We recently saw a video in our Instagram feed that featured someone making cold brew coffee with nothing but a mason jar and a coffee filter.  It seemed so easy that we had to try it out with some of our Screaming Beans coffee.  We used the following method:

  1. Measure out 1 oz of coffee for every 4 oz of water you intend to use (for example, use 2 oz of coffee grounds for an 8 oz serving)
  2. Grind your beans as fine as you would for french press coffee
  3. Add coffee grounds and water to a mason jar
  4. Let coffee steep for 12 hours or overnight at room temp or refrigerated
  5. Strain mixture through a coffee filter (we used our Chemex)
  6. Pour over ice and enjoy!

We were skeptical at first, and we typically don't like to wait that long for a caffeine fix, but the results were so worth the wait.  Our concoction was even smoother than most coffee house cold brews.  If you're not too attached to mason jars, you can use any airtight kitchen receptacle to make a larger batch.  Pro tip: if you like sweetener in your cold brew, add it before chilling so it will dissolve; we love adding Mikolich honey to our coffee.

Grab a bag of coffee and try it out at home!
